Low-Cost Spay & Neuter for Clay County Pet Owners
Affordable surgery at Pets Alive Indiana, just 1 hour from Brazil via US 40 East to SR 46 East
Clay County is a tight-knit western Indiana community where people take care of their own — including their pets. Whether you're in Brazil, Clay City, or Knightsville, you've probably noticed that getting a dog or cat spayed or neutered at a local private vet can run $300 to $500 or more. Pets Alive Indiana exists specifically to change that math. The drive east on US 40 to SR 46 into Bloomington is about an hour, and the savings — often $200 or more compared to standard vet rates — make it absolutely worth the trip.
We're a nonprofit 501(c)(3) clinic that has performed more than 230,000 spay and neuter surgeries since opening in 2005. That's more than 20 years of affordable, high-quality surgical care by licensed veterinarians. Clay County pet owners who've made the drive consistently rate us 4.8 stars on Google — not because we're fancy, but because we do the job right, treat animals with care, and charge a price that's honest. Cats are $90, dogs are $130, and there are no income requirements or residency restrictions. If you have a pet and you're ready to schedule, you're welcome here.
Same-day surgery means you drop your pet off at 8:00 AM and pick them up in the afternoon — no overnight stays, no extended worry. Brazil families making the drive should plan for an easy rural highway route with no complicated navigation. We're at 2444 S Walnut Street in Bloomington, and our team is ready to walk you through anything you need before your appointment day.

Frequently Asked Questions
From Brazil, the drive to Pets Alive Indiana takes about one hour. Head east on US 40, then pick up SR 46 East and follow it into Bloomington — our clinic is at 2444 S Walnut Street. The route is straightforward, primarily two-lane highway with clear signage. Most Clay County families drop off at 8:00 AM, run errands in town or grab breakfast nearby, and return for afternoon pickup without any stress.
None at all. Pets Alive Indiana does not require income verification, proof of financial hardship, or proof of residency in any particular county. Our low prices are not a subsidy program — they reflect our nonprofit operating model. Any pet owner in Clay County or anywhere else in Indiana is welcome to book an appointment and bring their cat or dog in for surgery.
Both prices include the full spay or neuter procedure performed by a licensed veterinarian, general anesthesia, and monitoring throughout surgery. For $20 more you can add a post-surgery pain medication and recovery cone package, which most owners choose. Feral or community cats qualify for our TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) package at $60. When you schedule, we'll provide a complete itemized list of what's covered.
Your pet should not eat any food after midnight the night before surgery. Small amounts of water are fine right up until you leave the house for the drive. On surgery day, bring your pet in a secure carrier if they're a cat, or on a leash if they're a dog. You'll also need to bring proof of a current rabies vaccination, or we can administer one at the clinic for an additional fee. Drop-off begins at 8:00 AM.
Our standard $130 rate covers dogs up to 100 pounds. If your dog is over 100 lbs, please call us at (812) 349-1349 before scheduling so we can confirm availability and go over pricing specific to your pet. We handle many larger dogs, and we'll give you a straightforward answer quickly. Clay City and Knightsville farm dogs are welcome — just check with us first on weight.
Pets Alive Indiana performs surgeries Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We are closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. For Clay County pet owners who work weekdays, we recommend booking a Monday appointment — you can check online availability anytime through our scheduling link and pick the earliest opening that fits your schedule. Slots fill up, so booking a week or two ahead is a good idea.
