Low-Cost Spay & Neuter for Putnam County Pet Owners
Affordable surgery at Pets Alive Indiana, just 1 hour from Greencastle via I-70 East to SR 46 East
Greencastle and the surrounding Putnam County communities have a unique character — DePauw University draws students and faculty from across the country, while longtime Cloverdale and Bainbridge families have lived here for generations. What they have in common is that pet ownership is high and so is the sticker shock when a local vet quotes $350 or more for a routine spay or neuter. Pets Alive Indiana is the answer. Take I-70 East to SR 46 East and you're at our Bloomington clinic in about an hour, paying $90 for a cat or $130 for a dog with zero income or residency requirements attached.
As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) clinic, we've completed more than 230,000 spay and neuter procedures since 2005 — more than 20 years of nonprofit veterinary medicine focused entirely on making these surgeries accessible. Putnam County pet owners have driven to our clinic and returned to give us 4.8 stars on Google because the experience is straightforward: you drop off, we perform surgery done right by licensed veterinarians, and your pet comes home the same day. No overnight stays, no hidden fees, no runaround.
DePauw students who've adopted a dog or cat during their time in Greencastle often find us through word of mouth — we're the clinic that makes responsible pet ownership economically realistic. Whether you're a student, a faculty member, or a third-generation Putnam County family, the drive east on I-70 is easy and the return on investment is significant. Frequently Asked Questions
From Greencastle, Pets Alive Indiana is roughly a one-hour drive. Take I-70 East and then exit onto SR 46 East toward Bloomington. Follow SR 46 East directly into town — our clinic is at 2444 S Walnut Street, a well-traveled route that most Putnam County families find easy to navigate. The interstate stretch is smooth, and the SR 46 portion through Cloverdale is familiar to anyone who makes regular Bloomington runs.
Absolutely. There are no residency requirements at Pets Alive Indiana — permanent resident, student, faculty, or recent transplant, it doesn't matter. No income verification is required either. Our mission is to make spay and neuter surgery accessible to any pet owner who needs it, and that includes students living in Putnam County who have adopted a cat or dog during their time at DePauw. You're welcome to schedule and bring your pet in.
The base price — $90 for cats and $130 for dogs — covers the complete spay or neuter surgical procedure performed by a licensed veterinarian, including general anesthesia and continuous monitoring during surgery. You can add a post-operative pain medication and recovery cone package for $20, which we recommend for most pets. Community or feral cats can be served under our TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) package at $60. We'll send full details when you confirm your appointment.
A current rabies vaccination is required for surgery. If your pet is not up to date, we can administer a rabies vaccine at the clinic on surgery day for an additional fee. You don't need to get vaccinations updated ahead of time at a separate vet — we can handle it same day. Bring any existing vaccination records you have so our team can review your pet's history before the procedure.
On surgery morning, your pet should have had no food since midnight the night before — water in small amounts is fine up until departure. Load your cat in a secure carrier or your dog on a leash, have your payment ready (we accept cash, card, and check), and bring any vaccination paperwork. Leave Greencastle by around 7:00 AM to arrive at our 8:00 AM drop-off window comfortably. After drop-off, you're free to head back to Greencastle or spend the day in Bloomington until afternoon pickup.
The easiest way to book is through our online scheduling system — you can pick a date, choose your pet type, and confirm your slot anytime, day or night. If you prefer to call, reach us at (812) 349-1349 during business hours, Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Appointment slots fill up, especially for dogs, so we recommend booking at least one to two weeks ahead when possible.
